Wes Thompson grew up in a modest family. He was adopted by an older couple and by the time Wes was old enough to drive, his parents were both in fragile health. Retirement wasn't all it was cracked up to be and Wes started to take on odd jobs after school and on the weekends to help pay the mortgage and the bills. After graduating high school, he decided to put off college in favor of working full time rather than weighing his family down with more debt. His parents tried to encourage him to live for himself, but he assured them that his time would come. He wanted to take care of them the way they had cared for him.
[break][break]
He was hired by a contracting company and one of his first big jobs with them was making some repairs at the Buchanan house. Wes was fairly new to the company so he didn't make any big decisions... just did as he was told by his foreman... drywall here, a nail there. He met the Buchanans' daughter, Kate during one of his days on site. She was young and beautiful and sassy, and she didn't have time for him. But that didn't stop him from trying to win her over... usually with a witty comment, a genuine compliment or a light joke. It became his goal to see her smile at least once a day. Before long he won her over and they fell in love and began sneaking little kisses and secret rendezvous every chance they could get. At least until they were caught one day and Wes was fired.

To make matters worse, Kate's parents had sent her off to boarding school. Wes was beside himself with the loss, and it only made matters worse that both of his parents passed away within months of each other during that year. Wes inherited the house from then and when Kate returned home, she began visiting him, sometimes staying the night or the weekend now that she was of age. When Wes finally proposed and she accepted, he felt like he was on top of the world again. He insisted on doing the right thing and asking her father for his blessing, having been raised on old fashioned beliefs, despite the fact that she thought it was a bad idea. Her father not only refused, but he threatened to cut her off from her inheritance. She proved that her love for Wes was stronger than anything by turning her back on a rich, comfortable life, deciding to run off to Vegas with her beloved and elope.
[break][break]
Unfortunately, the pair never made it down the aisle. They were killed by a drunk driver on their way to the big city. The sound of Kate's voice screaming his name among the sound of screeching tires and breaking glass still haunts him, even after death.
