Azrael, as an Archangel, never led a human life. He was created with the sole purpose of protecting souls throughout their lives; the original guardian angel. As such, once the angelic ranks grew, his task has shifted to training those who wish to become guardians. During the time of the original Academy, Azrael took great joy in his work, watching the recruits grow in their abilities.

However, the actions of Lucifer changed Azrael, forcing him to see that not all who seem virtuous truly are so. Azrael, along with the other Archangels, was among the frontline in the defense of Heaven. Seeing the carnage that ones who previously called themselves angels wrought on their fellow angels, infuriated Azrael. Since that time, Azrael has become more elusive, isolating himself on occasion from the other angels, even the Archangels.

When talk of reinstating the Academy started among the Archangels, Azrael was the one who suggested that the Academy be kept in Purgatory as a safe guard. If the recruits were to turn, like those had so many years ago, it would be better to already have them in Purgatory than to worry about the destruction they could once again cause in Heaven.
